Dr. Charles Boyd Starkey

Dr. Charles Boyd Starkey, of Williamsport, went to be with the Lord on June 14, 2017 after a short illness.

Dr. Starkey was born on June 21, 1958 and was the only child of Jack Raymond Starkey and Barbara Lollis Starkey of Greenville, SC.

Dr. Starkey is survived by his parents and by his best friend Daniel D. Dillon.

Dr. Starkey attended Southern Baptist College in Charleston, SC and earned his Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education in 1982.  Dr. Starkey continued his education at Charleston Southern in Charleston, SC where he earned his Masters of Education in 1992.  Dr. Starkey then entered Virginia Tech in 1993 as a Doctoral Candidate.

Dr. Starkey taught in public schools from 1982 through 1993.  Dr. Starkey joined the faculty at Bloomsburg University in 1996.  While teaching here, Dr. Starkey rose quickly in responsibility and was promoted to chair of the department of Early Childhood Teaching and Learning.  Dr. Starkey retired in May 2017.

Dr. Starkey was a kind and compassionate person and a gifted educator who advocated for better teaching techniques for all children, especially elementary age children.  He touched the lives of numerous teachers and his influence will be felt in classrooms for many years to come.

Dr. Starkey was an accomplished private pilot with full instrument rating and flew many small aircraft during the course of this life.

Dr. Starkey was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church.  A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 426 Mulberry St., Williamsport, 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2017.  The Reverand Andrew France will officiate. There will be a visitation for family and friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charleston Southern University, P.O. Box 118087, Charleston, SC 29423-8087.

Arrangements are being handled by the Maneval Allen Redmond Cremation & Funeral Home, 500 West 4th St., Williamsport.
