Irene Gohrig Obituary

Irene Gohrig, 90, formerly of Williamsport, passed away Saturday June 30, 2018 in Harrisburg.  Born April 13, 1928 in Williamsport to Lawrence and Mary Jankiewicz Mackowiak, she was raised in Williamsport and graduated from Williamsport High School.  On October 29, 1949 she married Jack Gohrig with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.  She worked as an executive assistant at Lycoming College where she was the first secretary to earn the Makisu Award, voted on by the student body.

Irene was a member of the American Businesswomen and received the Businesswoman of the Year award from the Laurel Chapter.  She was very involved with her church, St. Joseph the Worker in Williamsport, teaching CCD, participating in the Women’s Organization, and faithfully supporting the prayer chain.  She was also deeply Pro-Life.  She loved to play cards and bake fruit tarts.  Her greatest pleasure was her family.  Irene was a loving daughter, wife, mother and nana.  She always put her children first, just as her mother did.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren – always celebrating birthdays and holidays with her family.  Irene loved Christmas and Easter, when she planned egg hunts and made homemade peanut butter eggs, kielbasa and Easter Bread.  She always took the time to send cards, notes of encouragement, and care packages to her children and grandchildren in college.

Irene is survived by her son:  Michael Gohrig (Roxanne) of Williamsport; two daughters:  Mary Ann Barrella (Frank) of Mechanicsburg, and Patricia Dangle of Montoursville, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

Friends and family are invited to pay tribute to Irene’s life at her visitation on Thursday July 5, 2018 at St. Joseph the Worker from 9:30 to 10:30 in the portico, and at her Mass of Christian Burial which will follow in the sanctuary with Fr. Brian Van Fossen officiating.  A luncheon in her honor will be held in the social hall immediately following mass.   Her private burial will be at the St. Boniface Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations in her name to be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital https://www.stjude.org/give.html, or St. Joseph’s Center 2010 Adams Avenue Scranton, PA 18509.  Her family would like to thank all those who helped her later in life:  Irene, Vivian, Larry and Frank Stetts, the Hillmans, Comfort Keepers, St. Joseph the Worker Church and all her friends.  Irene’s family has entrusted the Maneval Allen Redmond Cremation and Funeral Service 500 West 4th Street Williamsport, PA with her funeral arrangements.  To share a memory or condolence visit www.jamesmaneval.com
