Martha Barraclough Carey Obituary

WILLIAMSPORT - Martha Knights Barraclough Carey, died February 28, 2018, at home, in the prime of life as she approached her 102nd birthday.

She was a graduate of Williamsport High School and received her BA from Bucknell University before teaching mathematics for three years in Jersey Shore, PA.

She and her husband Ronald lived in Foxburg, PA for 25 years, where she raised her three children; Martha B. Finn, MD (husband David Finn, MD), Frances B. Graham (husband James Graham) and R. Joseph Barraclough (wife Julie Kintner).

She was a devoted member of the Memorial Church of our Father in Foxburg, PA, wherein she played the organ, sang in and directed the choir and was an active member of the altar guild.

An avid reader and member of several book clubs, she supported the Foxburg Free Library.  She was very active in the PTA and “Band Aids” of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School.  A member of the Foxburg Country Club, she had a beautiful swing (never took a “mulligan”) and contributed to many pot luck dinners in the club house.  She continued her love of golf when she and Ronnie spent winters in Clearwater Florida.

Widowed, she remarried James Carey of Williamsport, when she was eighty years young.  She had two step-children, Jennifer Hart of Carlisle, Massachusetts and James Carey, Jr. of Wilmington, Delaware.

She was the quintessential grandmother of seven (now wonderful adults) and great-grandmother to an extraordinary young man and a beautiful newborn baby boy.

Second to her love of family was her passion for art.  Her watercolor and oil painted florals and landscapes are coveted by her family and friends as testament to her gentle nature and capacity to find beauty everywhere and in everyone.

It would be remiss to fail to mention her great sense of humor (she was very “punny” and if she read this, would “die laughing”).

She was a wonderful cook and her apple pies so incredibly delicious, they may well deserve their own obituary.

She was the daughter of the late Edward G. and Frances (Bartholomew) Knights.  She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald Barraclough, second husband James Carey, sisters Dr. Frances Skeath and Winnifred Knights and a brother Dr. Edward Knights.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggest memorial contributions to Favors Forward Foundation, 240 Winter Street, South Williamsport, PA 17702 or to Family Promise of Lycoming County, 635 Hepburn Street, Williamsport, PA 17701.
