Mary Goettel Obituary

Mary Ann (Monell) Goettel, 76 of Montoursville, passed away on the morning of June 28 at the Williamsport Hospital.

She was born January 30, 1942 to Gilbert “Pete” and Irene (Berry) Monell in Yazoo City, MS.  In 1973 Mary Ann married Frank Maddamma, who preceded her in death in 1986.  In 1989 she met Carl Goettel, and they were married in 1999, and were together until his death in May of this year.  Mary Ann was a member of the New Covenant United Church of Christ in Williamsport, she was active in her church and the church choir.  When younger she developed a deep love for music, she played piano and was active in the Harrisburg Choral Society.  Her husband Carl introduced her to barbershop music.  She helped found the local chapter of Sweet Adelines and their Susque Sound Quartet.  She was active in:  Harmony Inc., Heart of PA Chorus, and the Hearts’ Desire Quartet (which was very active locally).  After moving to the Williamsport area with her first husband, Frank, she was an avid snowmobiler, and would enjoy the opportunities the local forests provided, even snowmobiling up Pine Creek when frozen.  After marrying Carl, she travelled frequently, to the West Coast, New England, Florida, and their favorite destination:  Edisto Island, SC.

Mary Ann is survived by a Brother:  Gilbert F. Monell, Jr. USN Ret and his wife Mary, of Wilmington, NC, a Sister:  Nancy Zeigler of Mechanicsburg, two Nieces:  Stacy Irvin (Frank) of Dillsburg, PA and Ann Martin (Tom) of Roanoke, VA, and one Nephew:  Don Monell (Patti) of Gurly, AL.  She was preceded in death by both husbands and both parents.
