Mildred L. (Ertel) Lay

MONTOURSVILLE - Mildred L. (Ertel) Lay, 83, passed away Friday, November 17, 2017 at the Gatehouse.

She was born on April 14, 1934 in Williamsport and was the daughter of the late Reinhold C. and Mildred (Winters) Ertel.

Mildred graduated from South Williamsport High School in 1952 then graduated from Bloomsburg State Teachers College in 1956.

On August 20, 1960, she married the late Stephen Hodges Lay, who passed away on October 17, 2013 and they celebrated 53 years of marriage before his death.

Mildred had taught school for the Williamsport School District then became a dedicated homemaker.  She was a member of the New Covenant United Church of Christ of Williamsport where she was a Sunday School teacher for 20 years, on the board of Christian Education for 15 years and was part of the Altar Guild, Congregational Concerns Committee and Called to Care Committee.  She enjoyed reading, gospel music, traveling, camping and attending Penn State games.

She is survived by one son; Stephen M. Lay (Mary) of Bloomsburg, two daughters; Susan Lay Mayer of Loyalsock and Laurie A. Kustanbauter (Stephen) of Hughesville and five grandchildren; James Ryan “J.R.” Kustanbauter (Abigail), Kaitlyn Suzanne Kustanbauter, Jason Daniel Kustanbauter, Jacob Andrew Lay and Madeline Frances Lay.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother; R. George Ertel and one sister; Helen Joanne Ertel.

There will be a visitation 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the Maneval Allen Redmond Cremation & Funeral Home, 500 West 4th St., Williamsport where the funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m.  The Reverend Bradley Walmer will officiate the service.  Burial will follow in Oaklawn & Christian Hill Cemetery, Montoursville.
