WILLIAMSPORT - Betty Lois (Durkee) Shaffer, 91, died on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at The Williamsport Home.

She was married on April 21, 1951 to the late Robert C. "Bob" Shaffer for 53 years before he had died in 2004.

Betty was born in Bellefonte on July 9, 1925 and was the daughter of the late William M. and Mary E. (Houser) Durkee.  She graduated from Williamsport High School, class of 1944.  She then started with GRIT as a typist and then moved to the sales department in 1951.  She became one of the first two women GRIT employees to join the Williamsport Area Management Club which had been all male before her arrival.  She was named to the Bowling Hall of Fame in March 2008.  Betty was a member of the First Church-United Methodist in Williamsport.

Betty is survived by one sister; Mary E. Durkee of Williamsport and nieces and nephews, who were very loved by her and her husband Bob.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers; William, Frederick, Robert and Ralph Durkee and four sisters; Blanche West, Mae Orso, Marion Durkee and M. Louise Durkee.

There will be a public viewing 10 – 11 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016 at the First Church-United Methodist (Evangelical Center), 604 Market St., Williamsport where the funeral will be held 11:00 a.m.  DG Giordano will officiate the service.  Burial will follow in Montoursville Cemetery.
