Obituary

Larry R. Young, 88, of Williamsport, passed away on July 1, 2024. He was born on February 15, 1936 to the late Charles W. and Marian (Paulhamus) Young. He was married to Barbara (Baker) Young on October 1, 1960.

He graduated from Williamsport High School in 1954, where he was a member of the cross country and track teams. Upon graduation from Penn State University in 1958, he went to Naval OCS and was commissioned as an Ensign, and served on active duty on the ammunition ship USS Nitro until he was discharged in 1961. He remained in the Naval Reserves until 1988 and attained the rank of Captain. He served as the commanding officer of the Williamsport Naval Reserve Unit, and the Blue and Gold recruiting officer for the US Naval Academy. After leaving active duty in the Navy, he worked at the McCormick Insurance Agency until 1979, and the Hartman Insurance Agency until he retired in January of 1995. Upon retirement, he and Bonnie spent 20 wonderful winters at Pelican Pointe in Sebastian, Florida. He had the privilege of commissioning his two grandsons, Brady P. Young, 2nd LT, US Air Force, ROTC University of Cincinnati, and Jake A. Matty, 2nd LT, US Military Academy.

He and Bonnie were long time members of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served as senior warden. They spent the last 17 years as members of Faith Wesleyan Church. He served on the board of directors for the local Red Cross Chapter and the Susquehanna Council of Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Masons Lodge 106. He loved all sports, especially baseball and was an avid Phillies fan.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara "Bonnie" Young; his son, David S. (Cynthia Laychur) Young; daughter, Susan Y. (John) Matty; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Matty, Jake Matty, Brady Young and Olivia Young; and brother, William E. (Jayne) Young.

Visitation will be held from 1:00pm to 2:00pm on Thursday, July 11 at Faith Wesleyan Church, 1033 Tucker St., Williamsport, immediately followed by the Memorial Service with Pastor Tim Hartzell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Faith Wesleyan Church.
