"Sonny" Bair
February 4, 1921 – July 19, 2016
MONTOURSVILLE - Lawrence O. "Sonny" Bair, 95, formerly a resident of South Williamsport, died on July 19, 2016 at the Loyalsock Creek Rehab & Nursing Home. Born February 4, 1921 in S. Williamsport, he was the son of late Alem and Mary Edna (Chrisman) Bair.
Lawrence graduated from South Williamsport Jr/Sr High School in 1939 where he played basketball and football. He was the high scorer for the football team his junior year under Coach Barth and was the vice president of his senior class.
After graduation, Lawrence joined the Coast Guard where he served aboard Frigate U.S.S. Evansville for 45 months during World War II. It was during this time that he met his wife, the former Luella Emilie Niermann, a native of Osmond, Nebraska, and together they celebrated 67 years of marriage until her passing on January 9, 2015.
Lawrence retired from the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in the Wire Rope department in 1981. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He was very proud of his hole-in-one on number 7 at White Deer in 1980.
Lawrence was an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church for 38 years. He centered his life around the Lord and his family. He was a Stephen Minister at St. Mark's and gave consolation and support to members of the church.
He is survived by his children: Cynthia L. Huff (Ray) Williamsport, Nadine E. Wolfe (Dr. David) State College and David L. Bair (Gail) Williamsport and a brother, Allan (Arlene) of South Williamsport.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jon Huff (Teresa), Wilmington, DE; Kimberly Hufnagel (John), Corning, NY; Dr. Matthew Wolfe, Rochester, NY; Daniel Wolfe, Williamstown, MA; Kelly Allamaras (Damon), Williamsport; and Dr. Michael Bair, (fiancée Jackie) Lexington, KY. and his great grandchildren: Emily, Andrew and Colin Huff, Jacob and Benjamin Hufnagel, Landon and Cooper Allamaras, and Neil and Simon Wolfe. They all knew him as "Umpy" and loved him very much.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, Cletus and Bernice, and brother, Harold.
Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2016 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 142 Market St., with the funeral service to be held at 12:00 (noon) with his pastor, the Reverend Kenneth R. Elkin officiating. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery.
The family will provide the flowers and, if desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are being handled by Maneval Allen Redmond Cremation & Funeral Home, 500 West 4th St., Williamsport.
