COGAN STATION - Maxwell R. Shief, 93, died on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at his residence.
He was married to the late Marie M. (Coudriet) on May 27, 1948 and celebrated 59 years as husband and wife before her death on December 11, 2007.
Maxwell was born on December 26, 1921 in Williamsport and was the son of the late Watson L. and Margaret (Ireland) Shief. He graduated from Williamsport High School in 1942. He served with the US Army from 1942 thru 1946, during WWII, stationed in Alaska, Philippians and Korea. While in the service, he drove truck on the Alaskan Highway. He transferred to the Railroad Battalion in Skagway where he fired engine until he was sent to California for shipment out to the Philippians. Maxwell returned to the states and drove truck for his parents who owned the Dray Line and also worked at other trucking companies then worked for Continental Pipe Line. In April 1962, he went to work at Grit Publishing Company where he retired in 1986, just shy of 25 years service.
Maxwell was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Annunciation Church, Antlers Country Club and served as a Trustee, Montoursville Senior Citizens, American Association of Retired Persons, the former Hillside Hunting Club and the Grit Retirees Group. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing and traveling.
He is survived by two sons; Richard L. Shief of New York City and Michael L. Shief and his companion Stephanie Emig of Cogan Station, one daughter and son-in-law; Donna K. and David Mayes of Mill Hall and three grandchildren; Courtney Mayes, Connor Mayes and Chais Shief. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers; William C. and Watson L. Shief, Jr. and one sister; Freda M. White.
There will be a public viewing 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, December 10, 2015 at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Annunciation Church in the portico then a Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00 a.m. in the Church with the Reverend Brian VanFossen as celebrant. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Lycoming County Korean War Vets.
Arrangements are being handled by the James C. Maneval Funeral Home, Ltd., 500 W. 4th St., Williamsport.
