Obituary

August 9, 1934 – May 30, 2024

With deep sadness, we share the passing of our father, Rolfe Ross, who died peacefully, surrounded by his family in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania on May 30, 2024.

Raised in Williamsport, Rolfe lived most of his life in the Scranton area.  He attended Penn State University and made a career as a Project Manager in the commercial construction business.  Rolfe had an adventurous and friendly spirit.  He was always open minded. He appreciated, respected, and celebrated difference and diversity in the world around him.

His true avocation was making pictures.  He has been described by his peers as the "quintessential street photographer, who has been making photographs all over the globe. His tireless ethic for his craft is an inspiration." He was continuously curious, and it was this curiosity that enabled him to make friends with people as far away as Europe, Mexico, Cuba and in his backyard at Nay Aug Park. He learned their stories and captured them in his photographs. These pictures became his "projects," and many became subjects of his shows. He was an optimistic person, and this was reflected in his outlook on life. In the face of adversity, he often commented "It could be worse." His legacy lives on through his pictures as does his love for his friends and family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Reynold R. Ross and Edna Rolfe Jewell, and his brother, Julian.  He is survived by his longtime girlfriend, Pat Sumerano, his children, Lisa Ross (Marc Gallichio), Susan Prescott (Tom), Abbe Ross (Bradford Rowell), Amy Ross (George Clark), Todd Ross, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A celebration of life will be held in the near future. With special thanks to the thoughtful caregivers of Allied Services and Home Health and Hospice Care.  Memorial donations may be made to Karl O. Neuroth Endowment for the Advancement of the Arts at Keystone College.

Arrangements are being handled by Maneval Allen Redmond Funeral Home, Williamsport.
