Esther Zabitz Obituary

Esther Ann (Waldman) Zabitz, 93, of Riverside passed away April 20, 2023 at Geisinger Danville with her family by her side.

Esther was born March 27, 1930 in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late David and Bessie (Lipschultz) Waldman.  She was a graduate with both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education from Bloomsburg University.  Esther Ann had a productive career as an educator with a lifelong passion for literacy.  Beginning in the early 1980s, Esther established the Literacy League of Central Pennsylvania. Her vision for providing adult literacy is still helping students today.

On December 25, 1949 she married Milton Zabitz and together they shared 48 years of marriage before his passing in 1998.

Esther was a Member of the Ohev Sholom Synagogue in Williamsport.  Active in a myriad of communal organizations, she served multiple terms as President of the Columbia/Montour Chapter of Hadassah, served on the board of the Thomas Beaver Free Library, Danville, and dreamed up the Eastern Pennsylvania Jewish Singles Bank which resulted in several marriages.  She was an avid reader who devoured Philip Roth’s fiction & Ruth Rendel mysteries. After retirement, she spent time mentoring students, playing cutthroat bridge and traveling.

Esther Ann is survived by Barbara Zabitz (Joel Waldbott)Southfield, MI: Judith H Brandt, Catawissa: Hannah Zabitz (Steven Glickman) Bethlehem & Mark Zabitz (Lorraine) Boquete Panama. Grandchildren: Marisa Brandt (Victor Thompson) Lauren DiCicco(Lenny), Stephanie Zabitz (Spencer Brown), Sarah Waldbott Broudy (Alex) and Noah Glickman (Mayra). Her sister, Judy Weinburg, Delray Beach, FL also survives her.

There will be a Graveside Service on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at 1:30 P.M. at the Ohev Sholom Cemetery in Montoursville.
