LaRue Pepperman Obituary

LaRue Everett Pepperman M.D. Passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2022.  LaRue was born in Williamsport August 10, 1926 to Ruth F. and Clifford E. Pepperman. After graduating from the Williamsport High School in 1944 he served in the United States Navy in WWII in the Pacific and stateside as a Radio Communication Specialist until 1946.  He then reenlisted in the Navy Reserve until 1957.  Part of his training in the Navy was correspondence courses from Capitol Radio Engineering Institute of Washington D.C. which he continued after WWII until 1950.  In 1951, he was commissioned an Ensign Hospital Probationary.

In 1946, he entered Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA receiving a B.S. in Biology in 1950.  At F & M he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi National Social Fraternity.  He was granted his M.D. degree by Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, PA in 1954.  At Hahnemann he was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity.  He served a one year rotating internship at the Williamsport Hospital and a one year medical residency at Divine Providence Hospital before entering a solo practice of Family Medicine in 1956.  He was then appointed to the active medical staff of Williamsport Hospital and the courtesy staff of Divine Providence Hospital. 

LaRue was one of the organizers and charter members of the Lycoming County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Practice; LaRue was the Secretary-Treasurer of the chapter for many years and chairman of the membership committee of the State academy from 1962 to 1964.  He was also a Fellow of the AAFP, a member of the AMA, The Pennsylvania Medical Society, a charter Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and a charter member of the American College of Emergency Medicine.  He was a member of the Special Committee in Family Practice for the Pennsylvania Medical Society from 1965 to 1971.  In 1968 he organized the Lycoming County Medical Society Blue Cross Group and was a group leader for many years.  He helped found and organize the Emergency Care Physicians Association which brought fulltime emergency care to the Williamsport Hospital and the area in May of 1970.

Other medical interests include over 30 years as a Medical Examiner for Lycoming County Schools and the Williamsport Area School District.  From 1965-1969 he was appointed Medical Director of Lysock View the Lycoming County Home, to treat, update and organize the medical care for the 250 residents of the home. 

He was appointed a member of the Commission in Professional Liability for the Pennsylvania Medical Society from 1981 to 1985.  He was also an examiner for several insurance companies, trucking companies and several corporations.  He retired from active practice in 1990. 

LaRue was a 90 plus year member of the First United Methodist Church of Williamsport and served on several committees including 25 years as a trustee. 

He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge 106 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Williamsport.  He belonged to the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society, and the National Rifle Association.  He was a member of the Lycoming County Historical Society, where he chaired the committee that installed the large toy train collection of LaRue Shemp into the museum from 1982-1984, the Train Collectors Association, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, and the Lionel Collectors Club of America, the American Forestry Association, The Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg and the Civil War Trust.  He was a former member of the Williamsport Planning Comission and was a 70 year life member and past commander of Garrett Cochran Post #1 PA American Legion. 

In addition to his parents LaRue was predeceased by his brother Leon, his first wife, Geraldine Hinkleman Pepperman, whom he married in 1950 and a son Lee. 

He is survived by his second wife, Ruth Keller Pepperman whom he married in 1965.  He is also by a son, Lon Pepperman of Mount Vernon, Ohio; a son Creag Pepperman of Moultonboro, New Hampshire; a daughter Lisa Bauckman (Stephen) of Orlando, Florida and a daughter Lori Pepperman (Robert Russell) of Williamsport, Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.   

In keeping with LaRue’s wishes, a private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to the Lycoming County SPCA in LaRue’s name.
