Understanding VA Burial Benefits and Memorial Items
In order to help service members, veterans, and their families arrange funeral and memorial services in VA national cemeteries, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers burial benefits. Plot or internment fees, burial costs, funeral service costs, and remains transportation are all partially covered by these benefits.
To commemorate the service of departed Veterans, VA also offers memorial items such as medallions, markers, and headstones at no cost. Our funeral directors assist families with understanding eligibility, obtaining available assistance, and completing all required paperwork and applications because they are well-versed in VA benefits.
Who Qualifies for VA Burial Benefits?
The type of discharge and service status determine eligibility for VA burial benefits. Eligible veterans are those who were not discharged with dishonor. Those who lost their lives while serving on active duty, while training on active duty, or while training on inactive duty may also be eligible.
Even if a veteran has passed away, their spouse or minor child may be eligible for burial benefits and to be buried in a VA national cemetery. Veterans' unmarried adult dependent children may also be eligible in certain circumstances. Every circumstance is different. To confirm eligibility, we advise speaking with our funeral directors or calling the VA at 1-800-827-1000.
Military Funeral Honors
Military funeral honors represent dignified tributes acknowledging service and sacrifice. These ceremonies include the playing of "Taps," rifle detail, color guard, and uniformed service members who properly fold and present the United States flag to the grieving family.
The level of honors provided depends on the veteran's rank and service status. Different levels include Full Military Honors, 7-Person Detail, and Standard Honors Team Detail. At least one member of the funeral honors detail serves in the Armed Force in which the deceased veteran served. "Taps" may be played by a bugler or quality recorded version.
Our funeral directors coordinate all military funeral honors details, ensuring the ceremony proceeds with precision, dignity, and proper protocol.
Burial Flags and Headstones
Veterans who meet specific service requirements receive a United States burial flag at no cost. The flag drapes the casket during services and is presented to the family as a symbol of the nation's gratitude.
To receive a burial flag, the veteran must have served during wartime, died on active duty after May 27, 1941, served after January 31, 1955, separated before June 27, 1950, or served in the Selected Reserves or Philippine military forces in service to the United States.
The Department of Veterans Affairs provides headstones and markers for eligible veterans at no charge. Government-furnished headstones are available in granite, marble, bronze, or niche markers for all eligible veterans with unmarked graves.
Our funeral home assists families in applying for burial flags and headstones, ensuring paperwork is completed correctly and submitted within appropriate timeframes.
How to Apply for VA Burial Benefits
Families can apply for VA burial benefits by mail using VA Form 21P-530 or online at www.va.gov/burials-memorials/application/530/introduction. Within two years following burial or cremation, claims for non-service-connected burial allowances must be submitted. Burial allowances related to service are time-independent.
Fill out VA Form 10-1330 and send it to the Department of Veterans Affairs at 5109 Russell Road, Quantico, VA 22134-3909 to request a headstone, marker, or niche marker.
Our funeral directors help with filling out forms, making sure paperwork is submitted accurately, and comprehending the application process. To expedite the procedure and assist your family in obtaining all benefits, we collaborate closely with the VA.

Veteran Services FAQ
What is the difference between military funeral honors and a regular funeral service?
A particular ceremony known as military funeral honors includes uniformed service members, rifle detail, flag folding, color guard, and the playing of "Taps." These honors can be performed as a stand-alone graveside ceremony or integrated into a conventional funeral service. While a typical funeral service might be more generic in nature, military honors specifically recognize the veteran's service to our nation. Many families decide to have both: military honors at the graveside after a conventional funeral service.
How long does it take to receive VA burial benefits after applying?
The status of the service connection and whether the application is sent in by mail or online affect processing times. Although complicated cases may take longer, non-service-connected burial allowances normally process in three to six weeks. Benefits linked to services might process faster. To prevent delays, we advise submitting applications as soon as possible. Our funeral directors can respond to inquiries regarding the VA's processing status and offer estimates based on your unique situation.
Can my spouse or dependent receive VA burial benefits if the veteran has already passed away?
Yes. Even if a veteran died years ago, their spouse or minor children may still be eligible for burial benefits. Dependent children of unmarried adults may also be eligible in certain situations. Certain requirements, such as the veteran's discharge status and their relationship to the deceased veteran, determine eligibility. To find out your eligibility for your particular family situation, we highly advise getting in touch with the VA or speaking with one of our funeral directors.
Can we have a religious or personalized ceremony along with military funeral honors?
Of course. Any kind of funeral service your family decides on is enhanced by military funeral honors. Along with military honors, many families include religious components, personal readings, favorite music, and heartfelt tributes. Our funeral directors specialize in designing ceremonies that pay tribute to the veteran's faith, values, and character in addition to their military service. To make sure the ceremony accurately honors your loved one's life and service, we collaborate closely with clergy, military representatives, and your family.
